Wildfires threaten northern Finland as rescue services expand firefighting efforts

Wednesday 11th September 2024 on 10:30 in Finland

Efforts are underway to extinguish two large wildfires in northern Finland. One fire spans approximately 18 hectares on Sevettijärventie, while another covers around eight hectares near Lake Kirakkajärvi. The local rescue service is currently mobilizing firefighters from various regions in Lapland. Helicopters are also being utilized in the firefighting efforts, and support has been requested from the Finnish Defense Forces.

According to the rescue service, these wildfires are unusually large for this time of year, especially as fall is generally a later season for such incidents. Strong winds are complicating the firefighting operations, which are expected to continue for an extended period.

Initially, reports on Wednesday morning suggested that the situation in Sevettijärvi was under control; however, circumstances have since changed. The wildfire that began on Tuesday remains active and requires ongoing firefighting efforts. The affected area is still around 18 hectares, with personnel from the Lapland rescue service having been on-site for an extended time.

“The firefighting operations are currently ongoing at both locations, and we are continually gathering more resources to assist in the efforts. The areas are so vast that we are actively reinforcing our teams. The operation may take today, and possibly tomorrow as well,” stated rescue chief Markus Aarto.
