Kajaanin Golf Oy files for bankruptcy, ending operations in Finland
Kajaanin Golf Oy has filed for bankruptcy, announcing that operations effectively ended on Tuesday. The company cited its financial situation as unsustainable, noting an insufficient number of players who had paid membership fees. Board member Reijo Riihimäki stated on Facebook that he lacks information regarding the future of the golf course. According to Riihimäki, players who have paid their fees will have their rights transferred to Paltamo Golf at no additional cost, allowing them to continue playing there for the remainder of the season.
The news of the bankruptcy reached Akseli Leppänen, chairman of the Kajaani Golf Association, on Tuesday afternoon. From a player’s perspective, Leppänen noted that the poor condition of the course likely contributed to the financial difficulties faced by the company. However, he refrained from commenting on specific financial matters, stating he did not possess detailed information on the subject.
According to Juha Korhonen, managing director of the Finnish Golf Federation, bankruptcies among golf course companies are rare, although he acknowledged that the business aspect of golf is still significant. “I believe that companies in this sector experience bankruptcy much less often than in other industries, but it can happen,” Korhonen said. He noted that new operators typically emerge from existing stakeholders or other investors. Korhonen expressed hope that municipalities could become more involved in maintaining golf courses, citing examples of municipal courses in other parts of Europe. He suggested that a nine-hole, low-threshold golf course could enhance vitality in Kajaani.
