Protests planned at Alþingi in Reykjavik as public discontent rises in Iceland

Protests are set to take place at Alþingi today, reflecting rising public discontent. The President of ASÍ, Finnbjörn A. Hermannsson, expressed that there is significant “heat” among the people as the labor unions, including ASÍ, BSRB, and the Teachers’ Union of Iceland, demand action against inflation and housing issues.

Alþingi reconvenes today after summer recess, with Finance Minister Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson presenting the budget proposal for the coming year at 9 AM. The unions have scheduled a protest at 4 PM at Austurvöllur, criticizing the government for its inaction on pressing economic challenges.

Hermannsson criticized the lack of concrete measures to address housing concerns, stating, “There has been no indication of any actions taken. I see it as essential for them to fulfill the promises made regarding transfer systems. However, we see nothing being planned for the housing sector, which is currently influencing inflation.”

He emphasized the government’s duty to combat market monopolies and protect citizens against rising energy costs. “There are many actions the government could take but is currently neglecting,” he added.

Regarding the labor agreement conditions, Hermannsson mentioned signs of potential issues but stressed that the government should not delay addressing them. He affirmed, “There is heat among the people, yes,” indicating increased urgency for government action amid growing economic discontent.
