Significant fissure damages sports hall in Grindavík, Iceland

A significant fissure, reaching up to 13 meters deep, has formed across the sports hall in Grindavík, Iceland. Following recent natural disasters in the area, local authorities assessed the damages today.

The Grindavík City Council observed substantial destruction to key facilities in the town, including the sports hall known as Hópið, which has been rendered unusable. The massive crack extends deeply into the ground, with additional side fissures marked by colorful cones for safety.

The council conducted a thorough safety review before entering the area due to the severity of the situation. Grindavík’s mayor, Fannar Jónasson, expressed shock at the larger and deeper damages than anticipated.

Asrún Helga Kristinsdóttir, the council president, shared her emotional response to witnessing the destruction. She described the sports hall as a vital community center for children and youth in Grindavík. While she noted the impressive scale of the fissures, it was simultaneously heartbreaking to witness the devastation.

The fissures in some areas have reached the groundwater, raising concerns about potential further impact. Discussions are ongoing about the future of the sports hall, including the possibility of converting part of the facility into a museum, previously slated for demolition.

The Grindavík sports facilities seem to be in a comparatively better condition than the Hópið hall, as no visible damages were reported elsewhere. The City Council also assessed the nearby Víðihlíð nursing home, which has experienced severe structural damage, raising the likelihood of its demolition. City officials aim to make informed decisions regarding the recovery and future development plans for Grindavík.
