The police are investigating a devastating fire in Kemi as a suspected arson case. An individual has already been interviewed regarding the incident and is currently in custody. This person will face further questioning early in the week, according to police statements. An arrest was made on Sunday, and the suspect remains detained on Monday. The police also continued to interview other individuals connected to the event, including eyewitnesses, on Monday. Efforts are being made to reach out to additional relevant parties as soon as possible.
A row of twelve residential apartments was completely destroyed in the fire that occurred early Sunday morning. Fortunately, no severe injuries were reported from the incident. The police have stated that they will not provide more detailed information at this time due to concerns about the reliability of the ongoing investigation.
In response to the crisis, the Finnish Red Cross is assisting the victims by providing essential items such as clothing and hygiene products. Leila Eräpuro, a spokesperson for the Meri-Lappi branch, noted that many citizens have expressed interest in helping those who lost their homes. However, further coordination with local authorities is needed before any additional actions can be taken.
Teija Jestilä, the leading diaconal worker for the Kemi parish, revealed that a request for official assistance was received immediately after the fire. Concrete guidelines for providing aid to the victims are now awaited. Raimo Holopainen, a board member of the Karihaara housing foundation, mentioned that those affected have been invited to a meeting this evening. The burned row house was one of the foundation’s properties, and nearby, there is an apartment building with nearly 50 units, all of which are currently rented out, offering no immediate relief for those who have lost their homes.
