A year ago, police apprehended a man who had been igniting fires in the Pirkanmaa region of Finland. This article details how 25-year-old Robert Strömsholm, responsible for numerous blazes over the past eighteen months, was caught.
On September 5, 2023, Strömsholm was cycling in Lempäälä when the emergency services reported a fire at an abandoned house. Upon returning home, Strömsholm was stopped at his door by two plainclothes police officers. He repeatedly claimed, “There’s nothing unclear here,” indicating he knew he had been caught.
In Finland, there is an average of five arsons reported daily, with most being minor incidents. However, the Pirkanmaa region witnessed a string of serial arsons in 2022, targeting abandoned houses and historically significant buildings, raising public safety concerns and pressure on police.
Strömsholm’s spree started with minor targets but escalated, prompting authorities to investigate fire patterns for similarities. Police used profiling methods to narrow down potential suspects, concluding that the arsonist was likely not drug-dependent. As incidents became more audacious, targeting more significant structures, police began utilizing advanced investigative techniques, including telecommunication surveillance.
On September 5, 2023, after Strömsholm was spotted leaving a fire scene, police followed shoe and bicycle tracks back to his home, leading to his arrest. Evidence included gasoline remnants found in his backpack, along with extensive documentation of his purchases of fuel near fire scenes.
In February 2024, Strömsholm was convicted of 20 offenses, including 13 counts of severe property damage, and sentenced to five and a half years in prison, along with financial restitution of approximately 550,000 euros for the damages caused.
