Skorradalshreppur sees largest population increase in Iceland with over 32 percent rise

Since December 1, 2023, Skorradalshreppur has experienced the largest relative increase in population among all municipalities in Iceland, recording a rise of 19 residents, which equates to over 32 percent. This data is highlighted in newly released figures from the National Registry.

The second-largest population increase took place in Vesturbyggð, where the population grew by 21 percent, a change attributed to the merger of the municipality with Tálknafjarðarhrepp. Out of the 62 current municipalities, eight witnessed a decrease in their populations, while increases or stable numbers were reported in 54 municipalities.

The most significant decline occurred in Grindavík, where the population has dropped by 1,790 residents, representing an almost 50 percent decrease.

Population growth was observed in all regions of Iceland except the Suðurnes region, which saw a decrease of nearly two percent, translating to a loss of 608 residents.
