The joint freshman dance for five schools in the Reykjavik area, including Fjölbrautaskólinn in Ármúli, Borgarholtsskóli, Fjölbrautaskólinn in Breiðholti, Tækniskólinn, and Framhaldsskólinn in Mosfellsbær, scheduled for September 12, has been postponed.

The decision comes in the wake of a tragic incident where a 17-year-old girl lost her life after being attacked by a 16-year-old boy with a knife during Menningarnótt, a cultural night event. School principals from the involved institutions announced the postponement through a statement on Instagram, expressing deep sorrow and concern within the community. The statement noted that many people are mourning and struggling with the aftermath of the event.

“Given the current circumstances, there is no desire to hold such an event at this time,” the statement added. The schools will continue to prioritize the wellbeing of students and the community during this challenging period.

This incident reflects ongoing issues related to violence and safety in society, prompting discussions about measures to support affected individuals and prevent future tragedies.
