Vaasa Court upholds ruling against hotel manager from Pori for accounting violations
The Vaasa Court of Appeal has upheld a June ruling by the Satakunta District Court against a 40-year-old hotel manager from Pori. The manager received a suspended prison sentence of five and a half months for serious accounting violations and has been banned from conducting business for three years.
The convicted party sought the appellate court’s dismissal of the charges or a reduction of the sentence, as well as the lifting of the business ban. However, the court ruled that there were no valid grounds for further proceedings, thereby affirming the District Court’s decision. An appeal to the Supreme Court remains an option.
According to the Satakunta District Court, the hotel manager significantly neglected the recording of business transactions between 2019 and 2021, leading to the company’s bankruptcy in March 2021. The manager denied the charges, claiming that the accounting issues stemmed from his lack of expertise.
However, the court found that he should have been aware that the recording of certain expenses and debts on both sides of the balance sheet did not comply with accounting law. The court concluded that his actions resulted not merely from incompetence but from clear negligence.
“The fact that the accounting was not directly intended for personal gain does not change the fact that it was not reliable as required by law,” the ruling stated.
