Billström resigns as Sweden’s foreign minister amid political speculation
Tobias Billström announced via X that he is resigning as Sweden’s foreign minister and leaving politics altogether. Reports emerging earlier in the week suggested that there were conflicts behind his decision to step down. Sources indicated to Swedish media that there had been some difficulties in collaboration between Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Billström, particularly related to the appointment of a new cabinet secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
However, both Kristersson’s and Billström’s teams denied these claims on Wednesday. Billström clarified that there were no specific conflicts leading to his resignation. “The government office is a large process. I wouldn’t say there are any particular disagreements. There are always discussions, but nothing in those discussions specifically influenced the decision I made,” said the outgoing foreign minister.
He also noted that it is natural for more power to have shifted towards the Prime Minister’s Office, given the current security policy landscape that he characterized as the most serious since World War II. More updates are expected as the situation develops.
