A magnitude 5 earthquake struck the Bárðarbunga caldera just after 4:30 PM local time. This region has seen increased seismic activity in recent days, though there are currently no signs of volcanic unrest, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office’s natural hazard monitoring center.
Initial measurements suggested that the earthquake’s magnitude was 3.9; however, following a reassessment, it was confirmed to be larger. The Icelandic Meteorological Office noted that this is the largest earthquake in the area since April, when a magnitude 5.4 earthquake occurred. Earthquakes are common in Bárðarbunga, reflecting the geothermal activity associated with the region.
