Justice Minister Guðrún Hafsteinsdóttir to decide on Deputy Attorney General Helgi Magnús Gunnarsson’s future

Justice Minister Guðrún Hafsteinsdóttir has stated that a decision regarding Helgi Magnús Gunnarsson, the Deputy Attorney General, is approaching. Helgi has been on leave since late July, following a recommendation from State Prosecutor Sigríður Friðjónsdóttir to temporarily relieve him of his duties. This action was prompted by his comments in public about asylum seekers and refugees, which the State Prosecutor deemed “inappropriate and incompatible with his position.”

The matter remains under review by the Minister, and it is uncertain when a resolution will be reached. After a cabinet meeting this morning, Guðrún noted, “A decision is forthcoming.” When asked if it would be made this week, she hesitated, saying, “I cannot confidently say which day, but a decision is pending.”

The situation has continued to attract attention as Helgi’s remarks have raised significant concerns over his professional conduct. The outcome of the review could have implications for public trust in the legal oversight of such sensitive societal issues.
