Decrease in volcanic activity observed at Sundhnúk crater in Svartsengi

There has been a noticeable decrease in the intensity of the volcanic eruption at the Sundhnúk crater series in recent days, with neither land uplift nor subsidence observed in the Svartsengi area. This suggests that the inflow of magma into the accumulation zone beneath Svartsengi is comparable to the flow from the ongoing eruption. To determine if land uplift has resumed, it is necessary to monitor measurement trends over the next few days. Various fluctuations can occur daily that may impact measurements, such as humidity levels in the atmosphere and solar storms.

The eruption at Sundhnúk features two active fissures, having begun in August. While the lava flow expanding north of the fissures continues to grow, its rate of spread has slowed down. Currently, the lava flow does not pose a threat to nearby infrastructure. A new risk assessment is expected later today.
