Billboard ordered to be removed near Miklubraut in Reykjavík due to lack of permit
A large advertising billboard near Miklubraut in Reykjavík must be removed as it was erected without the necessary building permit. The owners are required to turn off the sign and dismantle it, facing daily fines until compliance.
The ruling came from the Environmental and Resource Management Appeals Committee, which upheld the city’s position that the billboard violates building regulations. The sign is located north of Miklubraut, across from the shopping center Kringlan. The companies involved, Lónseyri and LED-birtingar ehf., had appealed the city’s decision.
Billboards are prohibited along national roads like Miklubraut unless authorized by the Road Administration, which has expressed concerns about the billboard’s potential impact on traffic safety at one of the country’s most dangerous intersections.
As of now, the companies face a daily penalty of 150,000 ISK until the sign is removed and deactivated. Despite the ruling being announced on Friday, the billboard remained illuminated as of tonight.
