Two young men found deceased in jet ski accident near Austre Åmøy in Norway
It is too early to comment on the sequence of events, but it is reasonable to believe that the accident occurred during the night or last evening, said Kjetil Hagen, the duty officer at the Southern Norway Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.
Information first emerged around 1 PM on Sunday regarding a damaged jet ski. A search was initiated at sea, involving the police, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, and the Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue. Shortly before 2:30 PM, two young men were found deceased in the water.
Regarding the cause of the accident, Hagen stated that the jet ski has sustained damage. The police will investigate what actually transpired, but there is currently no basis to speculate on the cause.
The jet ski was discovered at Rossøya, while the deceased were located much further south, on the northeast side of Austre Åmøy, with a distance of nearly ten kilometers between the two islands.
The cause of the accident remains unclear. The police have indicated that their focus is on tactical investigations and technical examinations. An autopsy of the deceased has been ordered, and it is early to provide more details about the sequence of events, according to Håkon Lokna, the operations leader for the South-West police district. Both individuals have been identified, and their relatives have been notified.
