Power restored in majority of Vík after outage caused by cable malfunction

Power has been restored in the majority of Vík after an outage that affected the area last night and early this morning due to a cable malfunction. The issue was identified in a line at Jökulsá on Sólheimasandur, described as difficult to address by a representative from Rarik’s system management.

As of now, most residents of Vík have electricity, but some streets are still without power. Additional backup power has been secured, and it is expected that electricity will be restored throughout Vík shortly, with follow-up efforts to extend service to other areas in Mýrdal.

There are concerns that the power outage may impact telecommunications, as reported by Rarik. Last night, some residents of Vík and surrounding areas experienced disruptions in phone coverage. According to the system manager, it is likely that there is pressure on communication towers since services often shift from fiber optics to mobile networks during such outages.
