Surge in reported child sexual abuse cases in Finland hits record levels

Reports of sexual abuse against children in Finland have surged by nearly 42% from the previous year, according to Uutissuomalainen. From January to July 2023, the police recorded over 1,700 cases related to child sexual exploitation, marking an increase of approximately 500 reports compared to the same period last year.

The rise is particularly pronounced in cases involving serious sexual offenses against minors. According to Finnish law, anyone who engages in or facilitates a sexual act with a child under the age of 16, either through physical contact or other means that could harm their development, is liable for prosecution.
