Twelve school assistants in Garðabær were terminated today in the town’s elementary schools. The layoffs will take effect at the end of the year, with the duration of the notice period varying based on each employee’s tenure. A significant portion of the assistants’ tasks related to cleaning in schools, which will now be transferred to a newly contracted cleaning company, Dagur.

According to Åsta Sigrún Magnúsdóttir, a spokesperson for the municipality, efforts were made to minimize the impact of these changes on the school assistants’ roles. As a result of the layoffs, the responsibilities of the remaining 22 assistants will also change. Some will transition into support roles, others will become leisure activity leaders, while a few will continue in their current positions alongside other tasks.

The municipality emphasizes that the care for children in Garðabær schools will not be compromised due to the restructuring of cleaning services in the elementary schools. The spokesperson acknowledged that making such changes, which involve terminating employees, is always difficult.
