The Rovaniemi Court of Appeal has increased the sentence for a double homicide that occurred in Välivainio, Oulu, in May 2023. The court determined that the accused was guilty of murder in the killing of his partner. The appellate court upheld the lower court’s reasoning regarding the particularly brutal and savage manner of the crime. However, the court maintained the original conviction of manslaughter for the death of another individual, a man.

In November 2022, the Oulu District Court sentenced Esa Petteri Pellikka, born in 1991, to 14 years in prison, along with damages. The prosecution appealed this decision to the Court of Appeal. The crimes took place in early May in Välivainio, Oulu, where Pellikka admitted during the investigation that he had shot two individuals, a man and a woman, causing their deaths.

According to the Rovaniemi Court of Appeal, Pellikka is now charged with murder, manslaughter, and firearms offenses. Consequently, he will be sentenced to life imprisonment under Section 21, Subsection 2, Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code.
