Two fires erupt in Iceland, residents escape unharmed in Garður and Akranes

Two residential fires occurred in Iceland late last night, one in Garður and the other in Akranes. Fortunately, all residents escaped unharmed. The causes of the fires remain unknown, and investigations are being conducted by the police in Suðurnes and Vesturland.

In Garður, the fire broke out in the upper floor of a house shortly after 3 a.m. One resident was on the upper floor at the time but managed to escape before the fire department arrived. The lower floor, which houses a guest accommodation, was unoccupied. Firefighting efforts concluded just after 6 a.m. The building sustained significant damage, and firefighters had to breach the roof to extinguish the flames. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Meanwhile, in Akranes, a fire ignited in a lower-floor apartment of a two-story residential building yesterday evening. The Akranes fire chief reported that an alarm was received shortly after 10:30 p.m. There was one person in the apartment when the fire started, but they were able to exit safely. Heavy smoke was reported inside, but firefighting operations proceeded effectively. Despite substantial damage to the apartment, no other units in the building were affected. The cause of that fire is also under investigation.

The authorities are continuing their efforts to determine the origins of these incidents as they assess the impacts on the affected properties.
