Scientists warn of potential AMOC collapse, threatening climate stability in Northern Europe

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) has weakened in recent years, raising concerns among scientists about its potential complete shutdown. A reduction in this vital current could lead to catastrophic climate repercussions in Northern Europe. Without significant warmth transported from the south, the region could face Arctic temperatures similar to those experienced in Alaska and Eastern Siberia.
While extensive research has been conducted, the UN’s climate panel, IPCC, does not currently deem AMOC’s collapse likely. However, a new Dutch study presents alarming findings: there is a 95% probability that this critical current will cease during this century. The research indicates that the chances of Europe’s “heat engine” shutting down before 2050 are over 42%.
John Moore, a glaciologist at the University of Lapland, has praised the study’s statistical analysis but points out potential flaws. The research relies on a single climate model and makes far-reaching predictions based on 20 years of data. Nevertheless, Moore shares the concern, noting that during the last Ice Age, periods of weakened AMOC led to rapid fluctuations in Greenland’s temperatures.
If AMOC were to shut down, Moore suggests the consequences wouldn’t mirror the drastic temperature drops seen at the Ice Age’s end. Instead, Lapland’s climate could resemble current conditions in Alaska and Eastern Siberia, with extremely cold winters and hot summers. Moore warns that warmer currents might instead move southward, intensifying heat in Southern Europe and Africa, leading to extreme droughts.
The probability of AMOC’s collapse is contentious, with the Dutch study claiming 95%, while Moore assesses it at around 50%. He also notes that current climate models fail to account for tipping points—critical thresholds that, once crossed, could lead to rapid and significant changes in the Earth’s climate system.
