A recent survey by Yle sought parents’ opinions on the appropriate age for children to start wearing makeup. Most parents indicated that it is acceptable for children to begin applying makeup when they enter junior high school. In contrast, students reported that fifth grade is the right time to start. Annika Sivonen from Tuusula began wearing makeup in the fifth grade and now, in sixth grade, she enjoys using it for fun in the mornings, stating, “I think it’s entertaining.” Sivonen believes that makeup does not influence her self-esteem, stressing the importance of feeling good without it. “If you feel you look good with makeup, remember that you look good without it too,” she advises.

When children begin using cosmetics, parents should discuss which products they have and how to use them. Skin cleansing is also essential for those starting to wear makeup. Esthetician Marlene Rantala suggests that parents familiarize themselves with potentially harsh ingredients for young skin, such as retinol and vitamin C.

A survey conducted by ACO, which specializes in pharmacy cosmetics, revealed that 85% of parents would set a minimum age of 15 for strong skincare products. ACO has since released a guide in Finland for parents on safe skincare for children, providing tips for discussions about cosmetics.

For many, lip gloss is considered a safe first makeup product. Jaana Pekkarinen from Kaustinen allowed her child to start wearing makeup at 11. She emphasizes responsible shopping, limiting the number of products and spending. Pekkarinen observed that her daughter also uses cosmetics as decorative elements, organizing her makeup space as seen in social media among peers. However, she reminds her child that makeup has a limited lifespan and is meant for use, not just display.
