Blue-green algae blooms increase in southern and central Finland during summer

During the summer, blue-green algae were notably observed in open sea areas and along coastlines, according to a summary from the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke). The situation in inland waters varied throughout the season. Among the monitored marine locations, only one-third remained free of blue-green algae throughout the summer. In inland waters, approximately half of the observation sites reported no occurrences of algal blooms at all. The most significant blooms were recorded in southern and central Finland. Syke noted that the warm early summer contributed to earlier sightings of blue-green algae, particularly in the Gulf of Finland.
