Rescue operation conducted for man trapped in gorge near Rauðfeldsgjá in Snæfellsnes

A rescue operation was conducted in Snæfellsnes on August 28, 2024, to save a man who found himself trapped in a gorge near Rauðfeldsgjá. The Lífbjörg rescue team received an emergency call around 3 PM, reporting that the man had climbed approximately 30-40 meters up the gorge but lacked the confidence to descend safely.

The operation proved challenging, testing the climbing skills of the rescuers as they navigated steep sections of the gorge, which posed a significant risk of rockfalls. Rescuers ascended above the trapped individual and lowered themselves down to secure him with a harness for his safe retrieval.

Upon reaching the bottom, the man was reported to be somewhat cold and shaken but relieved to be freed from his predicament. The entire rescue effort took nearly five hours, with a total of eight members participating in the operation.

This incident highlights the dangers associated with climbing in steep terrain and the critical role of rescue teams in ensuring safety in such challenging environments.
