Central Party surpasses Independence Party in polling for Iceland’s parliament

Recent polling indicates that the Central Party has emerged as the second-largest party in Iceland’s parliament, edging past the Independence Party. According to the latest Maskína poll released this evening, the Central Party garners 15.3 percent of support, while the Independence Party stands at 13.9 percent.

The Left-Green Movement has seen a slight increase in support, currently at 4.6 percent, which is not enough to secure parliamentary representation. Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Alliance has seen a minor decline in its backing, now at 25.5 percent, still maintaining the highest support among all political parties.

Other parties have experienced little change in their polling figures, with the Progressive Party at 9 percent, and the Reform Party rising to 10.7 percent. The People’s Party has registered 7.1 percent, while the Socialists have broken through the 5 percent threshold, currently at 5.2 percent. The Pirate Party tracks at 8.6 percent.

The poll was conducted from August 7 to August 27. It is important to note that earlier headlines incorrectly stated that the Central Party was definitively larger than the Independence Party; instead, the data shows that their support levels are statistically similar, highlighting a close race between the two parties.
