Support for Progress Party plummets in Reykjavík as municipal elections loom

In Reykjavík, the support for the Progress Party has plummeted by 14%, indicating a potential disaster for the party if municipal elections were held today. According to recent polling data from Maskína, the Social Democratic Alliance would lead with 26% of the vote, followed by the Independence Party at 20%. In contrast, the Progress Party, which was victorious in the last election, would secure only 4% of the votes.

The poll, conducted between August 7 and August 16, also revealed 12% of respondents intended to vote for the Pirates, while the Left-Green Movement is projected to receive the least support with just 3%. The Social Democratic Alliance shows an improvement of 5.6%, the Reform Party 6.4%, and the Pirates a marginal increase of 0.3%. It is indicated that the Progress Party may secure just one seat in the city council, although this remains uncertain.

Only 18% of Reykjavík residents believe the city council majority is performing well, and merely 23% are satisfied with the mayor’s performance. Meanwhile, 44% express discontent with the majority, and just 10% view the minority positively. Notably, 42% of respondents rate the minority poorly, revealing significant dissatisfaction among specific demographics.

In terms of individual council representatives, 18% of participants rate Sunna Magdalena Mörtudóttir from the Socialist Party as the most effective this term, followed closely by Dagur B. Eggertsson of the Social Democratic Alliance at 16%, and Hildur Björnsdóttir of the Independence Party at 14%. The current mayor holds the fourth position, with only 7% approval among respondents.
