In a recent development, the controversial Seinäjoki Hyllykallio Kotipizza is changing ownership after a public backlash. Discussions surrounding the pizzeria began nearly two weeks ago when Nadja Stenroth, a mother of Romani descent, visited the establishment with her five-year-old son, who asked for water. Stenroth recounted her experience on social media, stating, “As soon as we entered, we were asked to leave. The male employee bluntly told us that ‘national costume wearers are not served here.’”

Heidi Stirkkinen, CEO of Kotipizza Group, confirmed the termination of the franchise agreement with the former owner. “We are currently searching for a new entrepreneur to take over the restaurant. Renovations are set to begin soon, including painting to improve the interior as part of a broader initiative across the Kotipizza chain,” Stirkkinen said. However, she refrained from commenting on whether there was a connection between the controversy and the franchise’s termination, stating only that they reached an agreement regarding the ending of the contract.

The incident has sparked significant discussion on social media. TikTok user Herra Kullervo tested the alleged claim of discrimination by wearing a traditional costume, and successfully made a purchase at the restaurant. According to equality ombudsman Kristina Stenman, while service providers have some discretion in choosing customers, discriminatory reasons such as nationality or religion are not permissible.

Nelli Sajakoski, communications expert for the Kotipizza chain, reiterated their stance against discrimination. “The actions of this particular restaurant did not align with our values or practices of equal treatment.” The former owner, who has been with the chain for a long time and has been recognized by the Central Chamber of Commerce, opted not to comment on the matter, directing inquiries to Kotipizza Group.
