Police investigate environmental violations in Suomussalmi, Finland

The police in Suomussalmi are investigating several suspects related to a serious violation of environmental protection laws. According to a police statement, the preliminary investigation is still in its early stages, but progress has been made in determining the roles of those involved in the case.

The police report indicates that the landowner sold timber to Stora Enso, which had commissioned the logging from a Kainuu-based forestry company. This logging was allegedly carried out as a subcontracting operation, according to the police.

During the investigation, the police will assess the criminal liability of the parties involved as well as any potential compensation claims. However, interrogations have not yet begun, and at this stage, the police are not confirming the names of the suspected parties.

The police have also considered potential confiscations during the preliminary investigation, but so far, no confiscations have been made, nor are any planned at this stage of the investigation.

Investigation leader, Chief Inspector Tiina Lehmus, stated that the preliminary investigation will take several months, partly due to the need to assess the extent of material damages. The situation remains under review, and updates will follow as the investigation progresses.
