Residents of Borgarfjörður eystri in Iceland have been advised to boil their drinking water due to contamination from fecal bacteria and E. coli. Health inspections in the area detected the pollution last week, leading to the urgent warning for locals.

The contamination is believed to have occurred as a result of rainfall, with surface water entering the aquifers located in the mountains. Although the levels of contamination are not extremely high, they are sufficient to warrant a safety alert, and inhabitants are strongly urged to boil their water before consumption. The water remains safe for bathing and other uses not involving direct ingestion.

This issue is not new to the region; similar contamination was reported last year, resulting in a two-week boiling advisory for residents. Officials expect that the current situation may persist for approximately the same duration.

Plans are underway to implement systems designed to prevent this from happening again. A filtration system is being prepared to be installed this fall, which is expected to tackle the contamination issue effectively.
