Man sentenced in Kuopio for severe tax evasion involving virtual currency transactions

A 37-year-old man from Kuopio has been sentenced to four months of conditional imprisonment for severe tax evasion by the North Savo District Court. The individual failed to report the capital gains from his virtual currency transactions to the tax authorities. The issue came to light through international cooperation that provided information on the unpaid taxes.

Between 2017 and 2021, the man sold virtual currency for over €270,000, generating approximately €119,000 in capital gains. He did not declare these profits, resulting in a tax shortfall of nearly €38,000 for those years. The court ordered him to pay nearly €19,800 to the Finnish Tax Administration as compensation, as he had settled part of the missing taxes prior to the sentencing.

The accused admitted to his actions, and the court acknowledged his efforts to address the crime during the sentencing process. The verdict is not yet final.
