Heavy rainfall causes flooding in Húsavík, prompting relocations and emergency response efforts
Heavy rainfall caused flooding in Húsavík, leading to the inundation of a home and prompting residents of three buildings to temporarily relocate. Emergency response teams, including police and firefighters, were active throughout the night, working until around 3 AM to address the situation.
Water accumulated in the hillside above Skálabrekka, leading to the construction of drainage channels to manage the flow. According to local authorities, a significant water surge was observed around midnight, originating from Húsavíkurfjall. Due to the intense rain and potential instability of the hillside, rescue teams were deployed to assess the situation.
As conditions worsened, the flooding intensified and emergency officials considered evacuating homes. Ultimately, residents opted to stay elsewhere for the night to monitor the situation in the morning. Fortunately, as the night progressed, the flooding stabilized, and no further significant changes were reported.
Despite these improvements, an advisory remains in effect due to ongoing risks in other areas, particularly the northern Westfjords and Ströndum, where landslides have been reported. The road to Siglufjörður is closed following debris flows, but no immediate risk to residential buildings was detected.
A regular emergency meeting was held this morning, with another scheduled after lunch to further evaluate the threats and coordinate responses. Conditions at Húsavík have calmed, with reduced rainfall and stable weather predicted for now.
