UPM plans temporary layoffs at Plywood factory in Ristiina, Finland

UPM, the Finnish forestry company, is planning to implement temporary layoffs at its Plywood factory in Ristiina, located in South Savo. The company is initiating renegotiation talks, which may lead to layoffs affecting staff for up to 90 days. Approximately 580 employees are involved in these discussions.

Juhani Tenhunen, the production manager of UPM Plywood, stated that the cost-saving measures are expected to last until March 2025. Notably, the company’s other plywood facilities are not included in these renegotiation talks.

The Peltos factory specializes in producing spruce plywood, a sector currently facing challenges due to a decline in demand from the construction industry across Europe. Tenhunen explained that the market situation for spruce plywood has worsened, prompting the company to prepare for a reduction in production.
