Home gardeners enjoy bountiful apple harvests in Finland

Home gardeners in Finland are now reaping an abundance of apples, with some even offering their harvest for free. The generous crop this year is attributed to a long growing season characterized by a warm spring, successful blooming, and timely rainfall in July. Heidi Wirtanen, managing director of the Finnish Fruit and Berry Growers Association, noted that while the total number of apples might be less than last year, their size is impressive due to optimal water availability.

In Finland, professional growers typically produce about seven million kilograms of apples annually, with almost zero waste since second-quality apples are processed into juice. However, excess fruit from home gardens often ends up in landfills.

Domestic apples are usually available until the end of March, and last year’s abundant crop even lasted until early May. Effective storage technologies allow apples to be kept fresh for longer. Wirtanen explained that almost all the oxygen is removed from the storage facilities, slowing down the apples’ respiration and preventing spoilage. Each batch is used one at a time, ensuring other fruits remain preserved without chemical preservatives.

Wirtanen anticipates that apple supplies will last at least until March or April of next year. As home gardeners collect their harvest, there is an ongoing call for tips on how to best utilize the plentiful apple crop. The public is encouraged to share their ideas for using apples that they do not need.
