Pekonen elected new leader of Vasemmistoliitto parliamentary group in Finland

Aino-Kaisa Pekonen has been elected as the new leader of the Vasemmistoliitto (Left Alliance) parliamentary group. Pekonen, who previously served as the deputy chair of the group, succeeds Jussi Saramo, who was elected to the European Parliament. Saramo’s tenure as the leader was brief.

The new leadership of the Vasemmistoliitto parliamentary group has been determined, with Pekonen’s appointment coming as no surprise due to the absence of competing candidates. The decision was unanimous.

Timo Furuholm will step up to become the first deputy chair, while Laura Meriluoto continues as the second deputy chair. Meriluoto has also expressed her intention to run for the party’s chair in the upcoming election, which will be decided through a member vote at the party council meeting in October.

Pekonen takes on her new role in a dynamic situation, as three members of the party have transitioned to the European Parliament. Alongside Saramo, they include the outgoing party chair Li Andersson and parliamentarian Merja Kyllönen. These shifts will influence the allocation of committee positions within the party.

In their place, first-time parliamentarian Jessi Jokelainen has joined, along with former MPs Johannes Yrttiaho and Pia Lohikoski. The decision regarding the new leader was made during the summer meeting of the parliamentary group held in Joensuu, which concludes today. Further updates will be provided.
