Ölfus faces planning hurdles for controversial land reclamation project off Þorlákshöfn

The municipality of Ölfus faces challenges with its proposed land reclamation project off the coast of Þorlákshöfn, with the Planning Agency not approving the modifications to the local development plan necessary for the project to proceed. The proposed reclamation has sparked significant controversy, particularly from the Surfing Association of Iceland, which argues that it would destroy the local surf break.

Ongoing debates have highlighted the Planning Agency’s concerns regarding the lack of alternative options explored for the project. In a letter dated August 19, the agency noted, “The environmental report on the development plan changes indicates that no alternatives were considered beyond the proposed option and a ‘zero option,’ whereby the reclamation is intended to support the South Harbor.”

The agency has requested that Ölfus provide justification for selecting the specific location for the land reclamation. It further criticized Ölfus’s claim that the project is not subject to environmental assessment, asserting that it should be notified to the agency for determination of any required environmental impact analysis.

In response, Ölfus Mayor Elliði Vignisson stated that the municipality will continue to collaborate with the Planning Agency and meet in the near future to discuss the project. He expressed that the agency’s refusal to approve the modification is not a cause for disappointment but rather a typical part of the administrative process involved in large-scale developments. Vignisson emphasized the importance of addressing the agency’s concerns and continuing the dialogue to ensure appropriate procedures are followed.
