Keskisuomalainen plans restructuring of printing operations in Lahti, potentially affecting 40 jobs

The media group Keskisuomalainen is planning a restructuring of its printing operations at Lehtisepät. The company has acquired a printing press and other production equipment from the Botnia Print facility in Kajaani, which is set to close. Lehtisepät is considering relocating this equipment to Lahti, which—according to Group CEO Vesa-Pekka Kangaskorpi—could be a viable option currently under evaluation. Additionally, the company is contemplating the closure of its printing facility in Tuusula.

The restructuring plans will initiate negotiations with the entire workforce, with representatives being invited to discussions on Thursday. According to Lehtisepät’s announcement, if the plans proceed, they could result in the layoff of up to 40 employees, along with part-time adjustments and changes in work arrangements and contracts.

Both Kangaskorpi and Lehtisepät’s CEO Sauli Vuorinen noted that traditional newspaper printing is declining due to diminishing demand for printed papers, accompanied by a drop in print runs and page counts. The situation has been exacerbated by rising costs, inflation, and economic downturns.

Kangaskorpi highlighted that Lahti presents an excellent logistical location for the new press, especially since the company had closed its Lahti newspaper printing facility last year. The former press was dismantled by spring as it no longer met current needs. The move to Lahti would prevent any operational break, as the facility is currently vacant, facilitating a smooth installation process for the new machinery.

Dismantling and relocating the equipment from Kajaani is expected to commence at the end of August, with production anticipated to start in the new location in early 2025. Lehtisepät estimates that the staffing requirement for the newly acquired printing and mailing equipment will be around 20 full-time positions.
