Icelandic Environmental Agency fines Nomadic Aviation Group LLC for emissions permit violations

The Icelandic Environmental Agency has imposed a fine of 34 million Icelandic krónur (approximately €100,000) on Nomadic Aviation Group LLC due to the company’s failure to submit carbon emissions permits for the year 2022.

Iceland, as a member of the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (ETS), is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from industries and aviation. The principle behind this system is that those who pollute are responsible for paying. Companies that exceed their allocated emissions are required to purchase additional permits accordingly.

The amount of the fine is determined by law and is calculated at 100 euros per permit that has not been submitted, with one ton of CO2 equating to one emissions permit. The Environmental Agency has the authority to estimate emissions if an airline fails to submit a certified emissions report within the specified timeframe or if the report is deemed inadequate. Based on data from Eurocontrol, total emissions were estimated at 2,307 tons of CO2 for Nomadic Aviation.

The penalty does not absolve the airline from its obligation to surrender emissions permits or acquire new ones corresponding to its operations in 2022. Nomadic Aviation reportedly operates from a base in Luxembourg and appears to focus on charter flights. The company has the right to contest the decision before the Ministry of the Environment, Energy, and Climate within three months of receiving the notification.
