Police investigate surge in bicycle thefts across Reykjavík’s shops

This summer, five bicycle shops in the capital region have been targeted by break-ins, resulting in the theft of a total of twelve bicycles. The recent surge in bicycle thefts, particularly of electric bikes, has caught the attention of law enforcement, which is currently investigating the situation.

Since late April, police have received reports of five break-ins at various bicycle retailers, including Örninn, Kríu, Peloton, TRI, and Púkinn, with expensive electric bicycles being the primary targets. Authorities note that such a wave of store burglaries is unusual.

Investigators suspect that individuals with substance abuse issues might be behind these thefts, attempting to raise cash by reselling the stolen bicycles. Reports suggest that the rising number of thefts could be linked to a recent withdrawal of prescription privileges for a doctor who had been providing pain management medications to individuals struggling with addiction.

According to store owners, twelve bicycles have been confirmed stolen, with five found. One incident resulted in the theft of multiple high-value bicycles, whose owners later discovered the thieves mostly grabbed whatever was closest.

Police are urging bicycle owners to consider installing GPS devices on their bikes. The cost is relatively low, and it could significantly aid in recovering stolen goods, thereby improving the chances of solving these crimes.
