Police investigate dangerous speeding incident involving electric scooter in Espoo

The police have registered a report concerning an incident where an electric scooter rider was observed dangerously speeding on Ring Road I in Espoo. A video of the situation has gained attention on social media. Commissioner Hannu Kontola from the Western Uusimaa police confirmed that the report has been filed.

According to Kontola, both the scooter rider and the motorist who filmed the incident are preliminarily suspected of endangering traffic safety, as both appear to be exceeding speed limits significantly. Additionally, the scooter rider is facing preliminary charges for vehicle violations, with the video indicating that the scooter may not be roadworthy due to its excessive speed.

Investigating the case is challenging, as reported by Kontola, due to a backlog in cases and the limited information available besides what is shown in the video. The identities of the scooter rider and the motorist remain unknown.

Kontola mentioned that incidents like this are rare but on the rise. “I don’t find it strange that this has occurred, considering the variety of scooters available today. As more enter the market, we inevitably see more incidents,” he stated.

He described the riding depicted in the video as dangerous, emphasizing that electric scooters do not provide sufficient protection in high-speed accidents, particularly among cars. “The rider is in acute life-threatening danger. If they collide with a car at that speed, it could lead to death or serious injury,” Kontola warned, adding that it is unsafe for scooter riders to navigate among cars in areas where pedestrian paths are designated solely for foot traffic.
