Terrafame plans expansion of mining operations near Lake Kolmisoppi in Finland

Terrafame aims for its planned expansion of mining operations in Finland to be classified as part of the EU’s strategic raw materials production. The company is set to extend its mineral extraction activities to the area around Lake Kolmisoppi, located in the northern section of its current mining district. Terrafame plans to initiate mining in this area by 2028, with future expansions expected to include sections of Lake Kolmisoppi, part of which is intended to be drained.

If the Kolmisoppi project qualifies under the EU’s critical raw materials production framework, the environmental permitting process could take a maximum of two years, facilitating a quicker approval. Finland’s state enterprise, Suomen Malmijalostus Oy, notes that strategic projects may also find it easier to secure funding.

Terrafame asserts that the currently mined Kuusilampi ore deposit, along with the future exploitation of the Kolmisoppi deposit, will together represent one of the largest nickel ore reserves in Europe. The EU’s regulation on critical raw materials seeks to ensure that Europe secures these essential commodities from sustainable sources. The regulation identifies 17 strategic raw materials, with Terrafame producing three: cobalt, copper, and battery-grade nickel. Similarly, 17 critical raw materials are also acknowledged in the framework, highlighting the importance of these resources in strategic planning for Europe.
