Kataja expresses disbelief over Supreme Court decision in attempted murder case in Jämsä

Pekka Kataja, a local politician from Jämsä affiliated with the Finns Party, expresses disbelief over the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn a previous conviction related to his attempted murder. The Vaasa Court of Appeal had sentenced Juha Lindroos to six years in prison for aiding in the attempt on Kataja’s life, but the Supreme Court annulled this conviction and released Lindroos from any compensation obligations. With the case now exhausted through all levels of the judiciary, Kataja laments the absence of victim support in Finland, stating, “Trust in the justice system is at zero.”

The attempted murder occurred in the summer of 2020 when two men entered Kataja’s home in Jämsänkoski and assaulted him. Kataja questions what evidence would have warranted a conviction. Despite his frustration with the judicial outcome, he commends the police for their efforts. “They did everything they could,” he says, while attributing the systemic issues of the Finnish legal framework as the core problem.

Kataja has been on sick leave since last autumn following the Supreme Court’s interim decision, catalyzing post-traumatic stress for him. He is currently unable to work and describes the prolonged legal process as burdensome, criticizing the excessive waiting times. “The victim is left in uncertainty for years, especially without a final resolution. I wouldn’t wish this fate on anyone,” he adds.

Looking ahead, Kataja intends to step back from significant roles in local governance to open space for emerging talents, though he has not yet decided on candidacy for the upcoming municipal elections next spring.
