Icelandic central bank to announce interest rate decision amid persistent inflation

The Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Iceland will announce its interest rate decision at 8:30 AM. Currently, the key interest rate stands at 9.25%, unchanged since May of last year. Analysts at commercial banks expect rates to remain steady.

Icelandic bank Íslandsbanki does not anticipate a decrease in key rates until the final quarter of this year. They forecast that persistent inflation, high inflation expectations, ongoing strength in the housing market, and a robust labor market will outweigh signs of a cooling economy and reduced demand pressure in the coming quarters.

Landsbankinn’s analysts also expect interest rates to hold steady. According to their latest economic outlook, they note that the language in the upcoming statement may be more stringent compared to the previous one, especially in light of recent inflation measurements. An additional analysis released earlier this week indicates that private consumption has exceeded previous estimates this year, which further supports the view that the committee may not begin a rate reduction process for now.

Today’s announcement marks the first interest rate decision since the summer break. In the last meeting held in early May, the committee decided to maintain rates at 9.25%. Inflation has continued to fluctuate slightly, measuring at 6% in April, rising to 6.2% in May, dipping to 5.8% in June, and reaching 6.3% in July.

The committee’s prior statement indicated that the impact of newly negotiated wage agreements had yet to be fully realized, and it suggested increased likelihood of the current tight policy being appropriate to bring inflation back to target within an acceptable timeframe. The formulation of monetary policy will continue to be guided by developments in economic activity and inflation expectations.
