Orpo faces backlash for vacation during EU meeting amid family celebration in Finland

Crisis communication expert and entrepreneur Katleena Kortesuo has commented on the recent controversy surrounding Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s vacation during an important EU meeting, characterizing it as a political misstep. Orpo unexpectedly canceled his participation in the European Political Community meeting scheduled for early June, opting instead to celebrate his wife’s birthday in northern Finland.

Today, Orpo addressed the situation during a ministerial group meeting in Rovaniemi. He stated that he prioritized his family due to the availability of a substitute, namely President Alexander Stubb, who stood in for him at the EU meeting. Kortesuo highlighted two issues: the mention of family reasons and the delegation of power to the president. She remarked, “In this case, the Prime Minister has ceded power to the president. Fortunately, the president accepted this delegated power, preventing a greater power vacuum, but it is certainly unusual.”

Kortesuo argues that a wife’s birthday does not constitute a genuine family reason. She points out that typically, family considerations involve serious health issues or emergencies, where privacy regarding health matters is maintained. She believes that citing a birthday celebration lacks sufficient weight.

Additionally, she observed that Orpo seems to have acknowledged the inadequacy of his reasoning, as he initially refrained from disclosing this information. If there were nothing to hide, he could have simply stated he was celebrating his wife’s birthday, which she feels is a rather ambiguous rationale compared to his responsibilities as prime minister.

Kortesuo noted parallels between Orpo’s situation and a similar controversy involving former Prime Minister Sanna Marin, who faced criticism for attending festivals instead of managing a crucial energy crisis two years ago, suggesting a broader lesson about political accountability amidst polarization.
