Akranes municipality remains hopeful for Skaginn 3X revival despite bankruptcy

The municipality of Akranes is still hopeful for the revival of Skaginn 3X, despite the company declaring bankruptcy earlier this summer. The local council expressed regret over the situation, which has resulted in the loss of 128 jobs, significantly impacting the community. They are urging relevant parties to collaborate on possible solutions to sustain operations in the town.

In a statement, the council mentioned that since May, they have been engaged in discussions with company management and have been willing to support initiatives aimed at securing the future of the company, keeping the interests of employees and the community at the forefront. However, despite these efforts, Skaginn 3X was declared bankrupt in July.

The administrator of the bankruptcy has informed the municipality about various aspects concerning the town related to submitted bids, but negotiations did not materialize. The local government is therefore calling on involved parties to exhaust all options for reaching an agreement and expresses a willingness to facilitate direct negotiations between the parties involved through any means available to the municipality.

The council highlighted the importance of a measured and factual discourse in these challenging circumstances, acknowledging that many stakeholders— employees, direct interest groups, and the broader Akranes community—are affected by the situation. They stress that blame should not be assigned to any single party in ongoing disputes.
