New residential community planned in Flúðir, Hrunamannahreppur

A new residential community is set to rise in Flúðir, featuring 180 apartments, hotels, and a hot spring bath. The mayor of Hrunamannahreppur reports that the municipality’s infrastructure is unusually strong, supporting this growth.

The community in Hrunamannahreppur is experiencing steady population growth, prompting several new developments. Plans for the area include the construction of 180 housing units, with all plots allocated in two streets currently under development. The streets will be named after peaks in the Kerlingafjöll mountains, specifically Fannbjarnartangi and Loðmundartangi.

Officials anticipate the new neighborhood will take around twenty years to complete, but they emphasize that the pace of development has exceeded initial expectations. In addition to the new housing, a 67-room hotel and the hot spring facility are also planned for the town center, alongside more housing along the Litlu Laxá river. There are intentions to build another hotel near the local golf course, though that project is still in the early planning stages.

The mayor, Aldís Hafsteinsdóttir, has reassured residents that the local government advocates for a moderate increase in population. She highlights the robust hot water and water supply systems, as well as the capacity for more students at the local elementary school. Plans for expanding the preschool facilities are also in the pipeline, potentially commencing as soon as next year.
