Insurance companies warn of potential damage during planned water outage in capital region

Insurance companies are expressing concern about potential damage following a planned water outage in the capital region. Starting tonight, hot water will be unavailable for approximately 36 hours, affecting large areas including Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær, Álftanes, and most of Kópavogur, Norðlingaholt, Breiðholt, Almannadal, and Hólmsheiði.

The outage is due to a shutoff of the South Line, a hot water distribution pipeline connecting geothermal power plants to much of the capital region. The interruption is necessary for connecting a new pipeline to the existing distribution network. The affected households will be without hot water until the system reaches full pressure again, expected on Wednesday.

Insurance specialists are advising residents to take precautions due to fears that the return of hot water could lead to damages. Sigrún Þorsteinsdóttir, a preventive measures expert, emphasized the importance of turning off the hot water intake and marking faucets to ensure they are closed. “We encourage people to know where to shut off the hot water supply in case of leaks when the water returns,” she stated.

Residents across this extensive area are advised to monitor updates from the utility company. It is also recommended that people remain home, if possible, when the water is restored on Wednesday, to oversee the situation. Utility providers have set up a communication page to keep the public informed about the progress of the operations, projecting a return of service by midday on Wednesday.
