Repairs to Helsinginkatu tunnel in Turku to cause traffic disruption this week

Concrete repairs to the Helsinginkatu tunnel in central Turku will take place this week. One lane of the tunnel was closed at the end of July due to the risk of falling concrete chunks from the ceiling. Another lane was also at risk, leading to a complete closure of both lanes for over three weeks. The cause of the damage remains unknown.

The Turku traffic center announced that repair work will commence on Tuesday evening, resulting in a full closure of the Helsinginkatu tunnel starting at 9 PM. The goal is to reopen the tunnel to traffic by Wednesday morning at 7 AM. Once the repairs are completed, all traffic lanes in the tunnel will be accessible again.

Helsinginkatu is located at the beginning of the Turku–Helsinki motorway, situated between the Kupittaa and Itäharju areas. Typically, the lane closures on Helsinginkatu have led to traffic congestion in downtown Turku and surrounding detours.

During the repair work, a detour will be in place. The alternative route will direct traffic behind the T-hospital via Hämeenramppi, Hämeentie, Savitehtaankatu, and Kalevantie, looping back onto Kalevanramppi.
