Woman sentenced to nine years for manslaughter in Kemi, Finland
A court in Lapland has sentenced a woman to nine years in prison for the manslaughter of a man. The sentence is not yet final. The incident occurred on November 10, 2023, at the victim’s apartment in Kemi, where the 56-year-old was attacked by the now 47-year-old woman.
Court documents reveal that the woman stabbed the man in the back with a large kitchen knife, which penetrated at least 10 centimeters deep. The records emphasize that this was not a mere act of aggression. Prior to the incident, the woman had threatened to kill the man during the week leading up to the crime, and a witness indicated that their relationship had been tumultuous. Police records show that both parties had previously been violent toward each other, with knives involved in some incidents.
The accused denied the charges, claiming memory loss regarding the night of the event. She stated she recalled only arriving at her boyfriend’s apartment by taxi and having an argument about paying the fare. She also claimed to have revived the man after seeing blood. However, the court found her explanations implausible, noting that there were no signs of resuscitation on the man’s face or chest. Additionally, inconsistencies in the woman’s accounts weakened her credibility.
In March, the court ordered a psychological evaluation at the woman’s request, which concluded that she was of sound mind at the time of the crime. The court has also ordered her to pay compensation to the victim’s family for their suffering and burial expenses.
