Seismic activity rises on Reykjanes Peninsula as earthquakes increase in Iceland

Seismic activity in the Reykjanes Peninsula is on the rise, with a slight increase in the number of earthquakes observed over the past few days. This information was shared by a natural hazards expert from the Icelandic Meteorological Office during a conversation with the press this morning.

In the last 24 hours, nearly 130 earthquakes have been recorded in the area associated with the magma chamber, including approximately 40 since midnight. Despite the uptick in seismic activity, the earthquakes have been relatively small, with magnitudes around or below one, and are primarily distributed across the magma chamber.

During the previous week, the region experienced an average of about 60 to 90 earthquakes per day, most of which also had magnitudes below one, maintaining a pattern observed over the past two weeks. The area remains under close observation due to ongoing geological developments.
