Former employees demand answers in Skaginn 3X bankruptcy case in Akranes, Iceland
Former employees and residents of Akranes are seeking clear answers regarding the failed revival of Skaginn 3X, a company specializing in services for the fishing industry. Sigurbjörn Lárusson, the former plant manager, expressed concerns that the community deserves to know why efforts to sustain the company were unsuccessful.
Recently, negotiations concerning the company’s bankruptcy estate have collapsed, and its assets will be sold piecemeal. Skaginn 3X previously employed 128 workers, many of whom were highly specialized in supporting fish processing and shipping operations across Iceland.
Sigurbjörn, who dedicated 26 years to Skaginn 3X, stated their hopes were high for a successful continuation of the business. Opinions on this situation vary widely, influenced by each person’s connections and the information they received.
A statement from Grenjum ehf., the property owner leased by Skaginn 3X, indicated that no party sought the property and that the company was excluded from all negotiations. The Grenjar family originally developed Skaginn before it was acquired by the German firm Baader. According to the estate administrator, potential investors interested in acquiring the bankruptcy estate could not reach an agreement on purchasing the company’s premises.
Sigurbjörn emphasized the need for transparency and accountability among all involved parties, stating that residents are eager for explanations regarding the loss of local jobs and the failure to secure a future for the company.
